October 1st and the Eric ID Law: A Personal Moment of Progress for Maryland

October 1st wasn’t just a historic day in Maryland — it was a deeply personal one.

As a woman, an entrepreneur, and someone who advocates daily for families and individuals with hidden disabilities, I know how easily their needs go unseen. Their challenges are real, yet often invisible. Their voices matter, yet too often unheard.

The launch of the Eric ID Law changes that.

With this law, individuals on the spectrum and those with hidden disabilities can now obtain IDs and licenses that reflect their unique needs and experiences. It’s a simple change with a powerful impact — one that brings safety, understanding, and dignity into everyday situations like traffic stops, public interactions, or emergencies.

I thought about the many families I’ve met — the mothers and fathers who’ve shared their fears about their loved ones being misunderstood or judged in moments when clarity matters most. This law responds to those fears with compassion and action.

I’m grateful to Governor Wes Moore, to Eric and the incredible advocates behind The Blue Runway for Autism, and to every voice that pushed this legacy forward. This is what true inclusion looks like: policy meeting purpose, and community becoming stronger because of it.

Maryland, this is a step toward a more understanding and humane future — and I’m proud to witness it.
