Last week, I had the incredible honor of witnessing history—the signing of Eric’s ID Law, a transformative milestone for Maryland’s disability community. Standing beside advocates, families, and changemakers, I felt an overwhelming sense of pride and hope for what’s ahead.
Eric Grantham, a young man living with autism, and his devoted mother, Ms. Linda Grantham, have been the heart and voice behind this legislative movement. Their tireless advocacy led to a law that ensures individuals with autism and other disabilities can voluntarily request a state-issued ID noting their diagnosis—enhancing safety, understanding, and dignity in law enforcement and everyday interactions.
Earlier this year, I was thrilled to recognize Eric and Ms. Linda with the Elizabeth Ucheya Community Champion Award at the Uplyft Awards. Their leadership continues to light the path for families like mine and countless others.
With the unwavering support of Governor Wes Moore, this bill sends a clear message: Maryland stands for inclusion, protection, and progress. And while the law is local, its impact is global—it represents a ripple effect that will inspire other states and countries to follow suit.
As an autism advocate, mother, and founder, I am deeply moved by this moment. Eric’s ID Law is more than policy—it is empowerment.
Let’s continue the work. Let’s keep lifting voices. The world is watching.
